This book is intended to help new users to learn the basic concepts of SolidWorks and good solid modeling techniques in an easy to follow guide. It will be a great starting point for those new to SolidWorks or as a teaching aid in classroom training to become familiar with the software s interface, basic commands and strategies as the user completes a series of models while learning different ways to accomplish a particular task.
At the end of this book, the user will have a fairly good understanding of the SolidWorks interface and the most commonly used commands for part modeling, assembly and detailing after completing a series of components and their 2D drawings complete with Bill of Materials.
The book is focused on the processes to complete the modeling of a part, instead of focusing on individual software commands or operations, which are generally simple enough to learn.
The author strived hard to include the commands required in the Certified SolidWorks Associate test as listed in the SolidWorks website, and some more.
SolidWorks is an easy to use CAD software that includes many time saving tools that will enable new and experienced users to complete design tasks faster than before. Most commands covered in this book have advanced options, which may not be covered in this book. This is meant to be a starting point to help new users to learn the basic and most frequently used commands.

I call this 'typical' because my frustrations with his end-of-chapter methods have followed me since my college days. I see it everywhere. To be brief, the exercises at the end of the chapters introduce challenges that were not covered in the previous chapter. Obviously, the typical logic is to 'challenge' the student, which is fine. But to introduce specific knowledge that wasn't covered is beyond frustrating. A student cannot magically achieve understanding just by being challenged. Digital modeling software requires very specific steps and knowledge. He, also, makes the typical assumption that since a person is reading this manual, then they must already possess peripheral knowledge for areas in which the software is used. An example that covers both criticisms, on page 136, his exercise requires knowledge of counterbore tapped holes. Although he explains how to use the 'hole wizard' for tapped holes, he does not explain how to use the counterbore, which requires a different set of instructions. He, also, does not explain how to read the blueprint for the counterbore. In fact, he fails to explain ANY of the symbols on the blueprints for his exercises. As I said, I can only assume that he is assuming that the student is already versed in reading blueprints. If so, I don't understand how he makes that assumption since the title to his manual includes the words 'beginning' and 'Level l.'One final criticism that is typical is that he fails to explain common operational mistakes for the beginner. Solidworks requires very specific steps to exit out of certain sequences. If those steps are not met, then the beginner will get stuck. He, like most writers of such manuals, must be assuming that the student will not make mistakes.
My only positive note, at least it is not as dense and useless as the The Solidworks Bible series.
I would like to add, though, that the instructional parts of each chapter are fairly solid. I feel that they do work at the beginner level. He clearly, and with stated intent, shows different ways of getting the same results. And he clearly defines the steps.
